Zoe

I stopped in my tracks and turned to see a little girl around four years old. She had blond hair and blue eyes and wore an adorable pink princess nightshirt.

Lance cast a nervous glance in my direction as he reached down toward the upstretched arms and picked up his daughter.

I looked at the woman who was giving me as surprised an expression as I was giving her. Then I looked back at Lance, who crossed the room to make introductions.

“Zoe, this is Daniella, she’s our nanny.”

The nanny. And he had a daughter. It all made perfect sense now. I had to physically restrain myself from hitting my own forehead. This was the big, bad secret he was keeping.

“You did the right thing, Daniella,” he said, then he turned his full attention to the little girl. “Lily! I’m so sorry, precious. Did you get more polka dots?”

Lily nodded. “Yes, daddy. I also had a bad dream.”

He snuggled her up for a moment and that’s when she saw me out of the corner of her eye. Her eyes got very wide and then her face broke into a grin.

“Daddy, you brought home a princess!”

Lance coughed and tried to shush her with his finger. My cheeks flushed.

“Precious, this is Zoe.” He turned to face me. “Zoe, this is my daughter, Lily. She’s developed what they think is a food allergy. It doesn’t look too bad this time. Daniella, can you get the Benadryl for me?”

Daniella brought the medicine and a spoon and Lily took the dose like a trooper.

“Hello, Lily,” I said with a smile. If his deep, dark secret was that he had an adorable daughter who now thought I was a princess, then I felt a lot better. I breathed a sigh of relief, walked over to Lance, and held my hands out for Lily.

If he thought this little one was going to scare me away, then he had another thing coming. I was great with kids, having grown up in a big family.

Lance looked very surprised at the turn of events, but he handed her over to me. He turned to the nanny. “Um, thank you. I think that’ll be all for tonight. See you tomorrow.” He paid her and she left with a wave.

I sat on the couch with Lily. “Hello, Lilly. What’s your favorite cartoon?”

“I like to watch all the princesses,” she said, “like you.”

“Oh no,” I said. “I’m just a lady in a beautiful dress.” Thanks to your dad. And if being a super sexy, very good dad was his only sin, I was seriously thinking about giving her dad a happily ever after. “Did I overhear something about a bad dream?”

Lily looked up at me and nodded.

“Well I happen to know a very good way to undo bad dreams.” I announced.

“How?” She asked excitedly.

“First, you go into your room and pick out your favorite stuffed animal and blanket. Then you come and snuggle with me on the couch and watch princess shows until you fall asleep and have good dreams.
